Besides having a giant “To Do” list concerning all matters house related (I did just move into a new house), I have your average, run of the mill, Baking “To Do” list. It comes from conversations, meals out at restaurants, dares.. you know ….”the usual.”
This one is by request. Well part request, part dare. Mike can’t resist a lemon tart (no. not the floozy – the DESSERT people) so he’s challenged me to surpass his expectations of his favorite lemon tart renditions featured at all the local tart hot spots (again, talking delicious sweet dessert.) You see, I make pretty darn scrupulous lemon custard, so I’m going to take that custard and put it into a tart, just as God, (and the French) always intended.
In return for said challenge, I get the gift Mike has partially wrapped and has left sitting in my closet, taunting me daily. It won’t be long until I make the tart because I can’t wait in suspense any longer.
2. A Rather Pleasing Carrot Cake (with lime marscapone icing)
Let me tell you what happened to me. A few weeks ago while spending some time at a friend’s house, I went through the agonizing experience of watching her ice this carrot cake and then I was verboten to partake in tasting. She told me it was a repayment to her neighbor for cat sitting (so she said), and she was convinced that it didn’t have the same sort of presentation if she gave it to him with a piece missing. But it isn’t just ANY carrot cake, it is Jamie Oliver’s Rather Pleasing Carrot Cake with a LIME MARSCAPONE ICING.
The result of said torture? I haven’t been able to get it off the brain.
Ever watch that show on Food Network, Diners, Drive In’s and Dives, and drool at your TV screen? (Or any show on the Food Network for that matter). It happened to me with this magical concoction.
In the words of Joey from Friends, what’s not to love? Blueberries? Good. Goat cheese? Good. Pie? Gooooood. The recipe comes from 3 Sisters Café in Indianapolis, IN and was aired on the Signature Sandwiches Episode. If you haven’t seen this one, I highly suggest you check. It. Out.
I stumbled across this little gem from Eat, Live, Run.com (go there, try not to make everything you see) sometime in the WINTER and I haven’t yet had a chance to make it. (“Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping, into the future.”- 90′s Steve Millar flashback). Given that it’s a mousse and not a heavy chocolate dessert, I figure it will be just about right to have after a bbq on the patio at some point this Spring. And since I’ve recently moved to the suburbs where having a BBQ is a weekly bi-law, I’m thinking there will be ample opportunity to experiment.
