Winterlude is probably one of the things that makes Ottawa. That and the fact that we have a canal running through the city and in the winter it becomes the world’s longest skating rink. It makes winter more bearable when you can actually get outside – and not only be outside but enjoy yourself. So Winterlude is the city’s winter festival and it runs three weekends in February. The past few years we’ve had really mild winters, and the canal was only actually skatable for a few weekends throughout the year. So we realized it had been three winters since we’d had the chance to hit the canal for skating.
The second best part of skating is the beavertails. They’re the doughy-deep friend goodness universally accepted as delicious throughout the whole country. Ok maybe they’re actually the best part about skating. If I’m being truthful we had to restrain ourselves until the end of the skate to get one (they strategically place beavertail huts all along the canal). Seriously you haven’t lived until you’ve eaten a beavertail 7.5 km of frozen water. It should be on everyone’s bucket list.
